You could be wondering how the quiz works but not anymore as we have got you covered. The quiz is basically based on the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). The EPDS is what clinicians use to assess the level of depression in pregnant women or mothers who have just delivered.

The scale is made up of 10 questions which are self-reported. Every item has been matched to different depression symptoms. Your total score is arrived at by adding these 10 items and hence your depression situation arrived at.

In just under 5 minutes, you will be done with the quiz and your situation gauged. A combination of the EPDS score and a medical test will provide the best results.

If after taking the test you manage to get a score of 10 or higher, there are high chances that you are depressed. The only demerit of the quiz is that it doesn’t tell to what extent the depression has affected your life. However, if by any chance you have ever thought of harming yourself (3), then you need to be subjected to more advanced expert tests.

The EPDS score can never replace clinical tests as such have been scientifically proven. The EPDS assessment should cover what you have felt the entire week (7 days) for the results to be within tolerant margins.

Take note that this scale doesn’t detect personality disorders, neuroses and phobias. Remember you can carry out the test successfully on your own, but failure to open up and discuss the results of the quiz with a health worker is more or less same as not doing the test altogether.

A health worker understands more what the results stand for and are even at a higher chance of recommending mental health professionals in case there is a need.

First-time mothers are usually at a higher risk of having Postpartum Depression (PPD) more than anybody else.

Treating PPD

The depression can be treated through medication or counselling. Counselling treatment can be done by a therapist, psychologist, psychiatrist or even a social worker. Cognitive behavioural and interpersonal therapies are the best forms of counselling treatment out there.

Medication of PPD can be done through the use of antidepressants. These drugs are good at regulating brain chemicals that are responsible for mood changes. However, take note that these drugs will find themselves in the baby’s body through the breast milk.

Postpartum Depression can be quite dangerous if not checked. In some cases, it has led to the loss of lives. The earlier it is detected, the better for both the baby and the mother. This is what postpartum depression quiz is all about.
